Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup dark molasses
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a baking sheet.

  2. Combine flour, molasses, buttermilk, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl. Beat until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface. Shape into a 1/2-inch-thick square. Cut square into quarters.

  3. Arrange squares on prepared baking sheet. Score diagonally into quarters.

  4. Bake until golden, about 8 minutes. Let stand to cool. Break each square along score lines and serve.

Secret Tip

If you prefer, you can use a 10-inch cast-iron skillet to cook the scones. To keep them from touching and, therefore, sticking together, cook two at a time. If you have a 12-inch cast-iron skillet or a griddle, you can cook them all at once.
