Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups plus 3 tablespoons sugar, divided
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease baking sheets lightly.

  2. Combine 11/2 cups sugar, butter and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer set at medium speed until creamy.

  3. Sift flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt together into a bowl. Add to the creamed mixture and stir to mix.

  4. Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl and mix well.

  5. Shape the cookie dough into 1-inch balls. Coat with sugar mixture. Arrange 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake until lightly browned but still soft, about 8 to 10 minutes.

Secret Tip

Two parts cream of tartar and one part baking soda equals baking powder. So if you don't keep cream of tartar or baking soda on hand, you can use 1 tablespoon baking powder in this recipe instead.
