Ingredients

  • 8 ounces fresh fettuccine
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 4 ounces Jarlsberg cheese, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/3 cup capers
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease an 8- x 8-inch baking dish.

  2. Cook pasta using package directions; drain.

  3. Place one-third of pasta in prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Layer with half the Jarlsberg. Repeat layers of pasta, salt, black pepper and Jarlsberg. Top with remaining pasta. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Dot top with butter.

  4. Bake until cheese is melted, about 10 minutes. Toss to mix well. Bake for 2 minutes. Add capers and oregano and toss to mix. Season with salt and black pepper. Serve immediately.

Secret Tip

Jarlsberg is a type of Swiss cheese with a mild flavor and irregular holes. It is especially delicious when baked, as baking mellows its flavors to a pleasant, buttery sweetness and brings out an appealing, "stringy" quality that makes it fun to eat. It's an excellent alternative to mozzarella in many baked Italian pasta dishes and worth trying.
